Roaming in the narrow alleys of one of the ancient city of the world BENARAS one cannot help but notice the clanging sound of hammer hitting the metal sheet. The Kasera and the Thatera community of the city has been trying to preserve this ancient craft, currently in their fifth generation. Very few of us know the fact that this community has contributed in beautifying the temples all over India , to name a few Salasar Balaji Temple in Rajasthan, Jagannath Puri Temple in Odisha and Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. The work of the artisan can be easily identified from the mesmerizing repousing work done on gold, silver, copper and brass sheet on the gates and the walls of the temple. Repousing as an art is as old as human civilization, from the Mask of Tutankhamun to the Statue of Liberty one can find traces of repousing but the artisans of Benaras have always shown their dexterity which makes them special in their own way.
The Government of India gave this art special protection under The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. But nothing much has changed for the artisans and craftsmen, their craft no doubt has enriched over time but it cannot be said same for their deplorable condition. Indiature has been constantly trying, innovating and improvising together with artisans as a team to give this art a whole new perspective through articles of Home Decor and Fashion Accessories.
